While I expected the snake to kill the alligator before eating it, as some constrictor snakes listen to a prey’s beating heart to know when to stop squeezing, it’s far more awesome to eat a full alligator alive.  The snake can afford to risk taking on prey the size of an alligator because of its slow digestive processes. Ingesting a full alligator lets the snake go without food for weeks.
